I heard a caller on sports talk radio tonight discuss Shawn Merriman and his Pro Bowl status. His take is that his suspension should negate this and he should not be allowed to go to the Pro Bowl. He cited the NBA, and that a couple of advertisers pulled Carmelo Anthony from their ad campaigns after the brawl a few nights ago.
My thoughts on this are that these are really apples and oranges here. You can't compare the two. Advertisers are playing on public perception. If the public is associating a brawl with a certain player, then it's in their best interest to not link their product with said player.
Now I certainly don't condone player arrests, suspensions, and all around jerkiness, but the Pro Bowl, All Star games, and awards should reward on field performance, and nothing else. Send him to jail afterwards, take away his endorsements, fine him, suspend him, but if his on field performance said he should go to the Pro Bowl, then he should go to the Pro Bowl.
