Talking about Floyd Landis and Maurice Clarett tonight, really begs the question, what other athletes have fallen from grace like this?
As a Cubs fan, I lived through the rise and fall from grace of Sammy Sosa. Back in 98, 99, and 2000, he was the ultimate feel-good superstar. He was a guy who loved the game, loved the fans, and had a contagious enthusiasm.
Then, he changed. he couldn't deal with criticism, turned on the fans and the media, and turned into the type of prima donna that we never thought he would become. Then the corked bat. Then the steroid rumors. Then the injuries. Then the feud with Dusty Baker and Jim Hendry. Remember what the Cubs got for him from Baltimore? Jerry Hairston. Jerry Freakin' Hairston, AND the Cubs had to eat a good chunk of his salary. They were that eager to usher him out of Chicago, and by that time, there just weren't any buyers.
Remember Congress? Remember how Sammy suddenly forgot to speak English?
We never saw it coming from Sammy. We never thought he would be that guy. |
