So who is the MLB player who is most valuable to his real team, but least valuable to a fantasy team? I'm not talking "clubhouse" guys here, who bring those great intangibles everyday! I want an everyday player here. I submit two names:
Jason Varitek - You could probably throw a lot of catchers in this category. Varitek is the team captain, and he handles his pitching staff as well if not better than any other catcher in the game. Papelbon was waving off signs last week when he blew a save, and later said that he was thinking about his next pitch too much. That doesn't happen with Varitek behind the plate. He just nods and pitches. Pitchers trust him. He's a guy you want on your team.
On the fantasy side of the coin, however, he was hitting a big, nasty .243 with only 11 home runs on the season before he went on the DL. Not exactly fantasy gold.
Khalil Greene - The guy is a defensive wiz, a regular human highlight real. Every run he saves on defense is as good as an rbi, maybe even better since it can be a momentum killer and stop a big inning. However, none of that parlays into fantasy points! Nice to see he is hitting for a little more power these days, but that .254 average just isn't helping your fantasy team any. |
