So I was wondering which is better...going to the Superbowl, or throwing a Superbowl party? I decided on throwing a Superbowl party because I think it's better! You have all your friends there, lots of food and beer, and an awesome tv to watch the game (that's crucial!). I actually want to buy a new tv...any recommendations on what's good? I was thinking between Sony and Vizio. Sony is a little too expensive though, so my next best bet would be Vizio. Any ideas??

Thanks

Welcome to the community FootballRules. It's nice to see some new people posting.

Overall, I'd have to say that it would be better to go to the Super Bowl vs. watching it. There's just so much energy in being at any game, and the Super Bowl would be even more so. It would be a great atmosphere and a really fun place to be. Plus, the Super Bowl festivities leading up to the game would be a lot of fun to take part in.
There is a lot to be said for watching the game in high def though. Before high def, I don't think you could even ask that question realistically. Now though, with a nice big high def tv, you really get a better view of the action than you would being there. Having all of the food and drink you want and being around your friends is nice too. You really can't go wrong having a Super Bowl party.

As for your other question, I don't know too much about Vizio. Sony makes great tvs, but you're paying for the name as well. A couple of brands to consider if you really want a lot of bang for your buck are LG and Olevia. Both manufacturers take the approach of just giving you the basics, a really great picture and a minimum of features, rather than loading the tv with bells and whistles that most people never use, in order to keep the cost down. I'm happy with my LG. It's a plasma. I've read a couple of reviews online from people stating that they had issues with the menu after six months or so. I have not had this issue, but I did see this mentioned more than once. I'm pretty sure Cubfanindy has an Olevia. Perhaps he can tell us something about it.

Outside of the brand, you also have to ask yourself what type of tv you want, plasma, lcd, or dlp.

Thanks SportsDad for the tip! I've been to sporting events and you're right, there's nothing like being at the actual game, with thousands of screaming fans - especially if they're screaming for your team! Just so much energy...especially being a Superbowl, the World Series, or NBA Championship, etc.

Then again, I've been to sports parties and those are a blast too. You're surrounded by friends and cheering and sports discussions and you don't have to worry about an opposing fan talking major crap to you Laughing

I look into LG's and Olevia's too. One of the reasons I mentioned Vizio is because one of my favorite players, LT, is featured on their website (vizio.com/lt) and I'm such a sucker when it comes to the media and sports and advertisements! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes But besides that, I DID hear it was a great brand

I like a balance of going to the game and watching it on TV. I go to all of the Colts home games, and just have a blast. Then I get to watch the road games in high def, and you can definitely follow the game better. I always wind up a little more sober watching the game at home than I am when I'm at the dome too. Weird. I had to vote for going to the Super Bowl though, since I've never been, and I have had Super Bowl parties or been to them pretty much every year.

I do have an Olevia. I love it. It was an incredible value for the money. It's just as SportsDad described - no frills, just a great picture. At the time I bought in, just a few months ago, I hadn't heard much about them. Now I see their sponsoring some events on ESPN. Good to see the name out there, but I think that might start driving the price up.
Mine is a 47inch LCD, 1080p. I bought it online through Circuit City around Thanksgiving for $1100 and got the 2 years, no interest deal. I must have just caught it at the right time, as they now have it listed at $1599.
Well worth the money. Only problem is now I'm watching too much tv and playing too much PS3! Ah well. It's cold outside. I'll get back out there when it warms up.

Are you seriously more sober at home than at the dome? Wow that is hard to believe. Having to wait in line for $10 beer.... then carrying it back to your seat, etc. Haha that is quite the feat!

Thanks for the TV advice guys. I am thinking about the 42" Vizio at Costco... It's only $1049 which seems pretty cheap to me. Maybe I'll look at Olevia too. Well I need to get something ASAP! Don't think my friends will be impressed at my party with the ol' 26" haha

Keep us posted. Just remember to stay away from 720p. Most high def stations are now broadcasting in 1080i now. It's a nice improvement over the 720p.
No one is broadcasting in 1080p yet, so that isn't a big deal. If the price is about the same, I'd get the 1080p over the 1080i, but you won't be able to take advantage of it yet, unless you plan on watching a lot of blurays. Even then, there's some debate as to whether or not you can see a difference.

I think with the "being at the game" I too would tend to drink more when being there. You have to factor in the tailgates, which I would not be doing at home, and there are plenty of beer venders wandering the stands, so you really don't have to wait in line. Pricey though.

Ok guys... This is kinda funny...

Went to Costco to pick up the 42" Vizio last night. Then, of course we saw that Costco had the 60" Vizio plasma on sale for only $2k.

That was more than we had wanted to spend but I figured it might be too good of a deal to pass up. We debated about it... my wife was a little squeamish about the idea of a TV that big, but I used my magical skills of persuasion.

So we got it. And now I feel kinda embarrassed about it when we had intended to get something so much smaller. But hey, I got a 60" plasma for $2k. It will be ALMOST as good as going to the game haha.

Hey everyone I just joined this forum!

I voted for hosting a party as better because it's so much cheaper! Plus I like being able to talk to everyone and relax on the couch, drink lots of beer for cheap, make GOOD food, etc. My sons play football and have their friends over for our SB parties every year and it's fantastic!

I don't know much about TVs- I think we have a Panasonic?? I was out at a restaurant/bar the other night though and they had Vizios- I remember cuz I thought what is that brand??? Anyway they looked really good. Congrats on your purchase!

I hope eveyrone has a good time partying at home or at the big game!
