It's true. 75% of the total votes is needed for induction. Ripken received 98.5% of the votes, and Gwynn received 97.6%.
As high as that is, to me, it seems like a no brainer - both of those guys deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Hell, Cal Ripken Jr. broke the unbreakable record - Lou Gehrig's "Iron Man" record, by playing in an unheard of 2632 consecutive games. Gehrig's unbreakable record was 2130. Not only did Ripken break it, he shattered it. Ripken received 537 of 545 votes. Who are the eight deusch-nozzles who didn't vote for him?!? Who are the 8 guys who's standards are so impossibly high that they didn't vote for Cal Ripken Jr??? That's the third highest percentage ever, for those of you keeping score at home.
Honestly, I think the 8 votes were sportswriters who just didn't turn in their card. I believe that not voting counts as a no. I could use some verification on that, though.
McGwire did NOT get in, nor was he close. He won't, either. Nor does he deserve to. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I'll rant about it another day. |

Sure McGwire (not McGuire) didn't get the votes, but in an era where reportedly a high percentage of players were cheating, doesn't the best cheater of the lot (with some deference to Barry Bonds) get inducted under a banner a shame? Though it wouldn't be stated, there would be an understood, "He was the best of the cheaters" behind his shrine in the Hall.
And I still think it is sheer lunacy Bert Blyleven continues to be denied his Hall pass. |

I think you have to look at it as "Would he have gotten in without the steroids?" With McGwire or Sosa? Absolutely not. Bonds? Yes. The benchmark with McGwire has to be Roger Maris, who is not in the Hall of Fame. He and McGwire are very similar players, except Maris wasn't on the juice.
Remember the giant jar of andros he kept in his locker? Canseco was right. It was just a red herring. |
