If you haven't heard, the rumors are flying that the Chargers will fire Marty Schottenheimer. At first, this is shocking news, as the Chargers were 14-2, and barely lost to the Patriots in the play-offs. However, that really doesn't tell the whole story.

I don't think Marty Schottenheimer is a very good coach and
"Marty-ball" is too conservative and outdated, particularly when you
have a team with the offensive weapons of the Chargers. I'm on board
with his firing. He has little to do with the personnel on the field,
and he has darn good personnel. It's misleading from the outside,
because you see a team with a 14-2 record. That would imply that the
coach is doing a good job, but I believe they achieved that despite
Marty, and not because of. I think a lot of fairly bad coaches keep
their jobs too long because of this. I don't think Bill Cowher is a
particularly good coach.

The real benchmark is if a coach can make an average, or bad, team
better. A bad team can be tough though, and can be a coaching abyss. No
one is going to coach Oakland out of the hole they've dug for
themselves. The manpower isn't in place, and there is too much strife
among the players they do have.

I think Sean Peyton is a great coach. Granted, the talent is there, but
he got everyone playing together, and his split back schemes and
utilizing Reggie Bush in blocking and receiving schemes has been
brilliant.
