I heard on the radio and verified online that the Yankees are exploring dealing Randy Johnson. The prime candidate right now is Arizona. However, talks hit a snag in that the Yankees are asking for prospects in return AND want the other team to pick up his entire $16 million salary.
Wow. Good luck with that. What really throws me is that Arizona is interested. The Diamondbacks have some nice youth in place, but let’s face it; they’re several years away from being a legitimate contender. Why mortgage that future to acquire a veteran who will likely only pitch one more year, even if it is Randy Johnson? Perhaps they believe that there is enough parity in the NL West (which there is), and Johnson will be the edge they need to come out on top. Personally, I think they’d be insane to deal prospects and pick up that salary.
I’m curious to see how this plays out. I think Johnson for his salary and prospects will be tough for the Yankees to pull off, but there are some teams out there on the verge who want to win now. Actually, my Cubs would seem to be a decent candidate. They’ve made moves to try to win now, are willing to spend the money, and have a couple of young arms the Yankees might be interested in. I wouldn’t be averse to seeing that, provided one of the arms is not Rich Hill. I doubt the Cubs will, though, as they’ve completed their rotation with the signings of Marquis and Ted Lilly. Still, slot Johnson in for anyone except Zambrano (Prior you just can’t count on to stay healthy) in Zambrano/Prior/Hill/Lilly/Marquis and it’s an upgrade. I’d rather leave Rich Hill in there though, even over Randy Johnson. He earned it, and he’s only going to get better. |
