I watched the 2007 Major League Home Run Derby with the kids last night. I think this event gets a bad rap. I enjoyed it. I don't know why people are so down on the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. The players were really into it and looked like they were really having fun out there. They looked like a bunch of kids having a good time. It was something I was really glad I could watch with my kids.
I particularly enjoyed Big Papi interrupting Vlad Guerrero in the first round after he'd done nothing with his first 3 swings. He stopped him, took his bat, tossed it aside, had a wooden case brought out, opened it, and presented Vlad with the bat inside. Apparently that one worked out for him, as he won went on to win the derby.
It was a real feel-good event. We don't have enough of those in sports anymore. I was glad I could share it with my kids and I'm looking forward to watching the All-Star game with them tonight. |

Yeah, I still like them both, and it did look like the players were really having fun this year, especially during the Home Run derby. My only really complaint from a "just watching it" perspective is Chris Berman. I can't handle the guy. I can't stand hearing him yell "BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK" over and over again. Yeah. That's good commentary. It's a home run derby. We get it. You don't have to sling it on every swing.
I'm just not a fan of the "catch phrase" guys. I'd rather hear some real commentary. |
